Summer Webinar Series

June-July 2024

Cost: $25/student per webinar

Time: 12:00 PM-2:00 PM EST

June 14: Testimony for the Bloodstain Pattern Analyst

-Testimony can be an inundating part of forensic work, especially when testifying on a niche area or expertise. Join Dr. Sievers to discuss tips, tricks, do's, and don'ts of courtroom testimony geared specifically towards testimony of bloodstain patterns and moving towards expert testimony.

June 21st: When Transfer Looks Like Spatter: Examination of Transferred Stains on Various Textiles

-Examine research conducted by Dr. Sievers and her team to work through one of the biggest challenges in BPA: examining fabrics and textiles. This session dives in to common observations of spatter and transfer on various surfaces as well as instances where transfer patterns may have the initial physical appearance of spatter.

July 5th: Identification of Bloodstain Patterns on Complex Surfaces

-Expand your knowledge further regarding bloodstain pattern identification to take complex, difficult, and unique surfaces into consideration as to the changes in pattern distribution, appearance, or consistency.

July 12th: Bloodstain Experimentation and the Scientific Method

-This webinar focuses on advanced BPA topics that include the need for experimentation within the discipline, in both case-specific examples as well as the need of expansion of knowledge within the field overall. The course reinforces the scientific methods and provides students with the proper approach to crafting a bloodstain experiment.

Elements of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis: Required Knowledge for the Bloodstain Pattern Analyst

Sievers Forensics and Gap Science - 4 Part Series

Elements of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis: Required Knowledge for the Bloodstain Pattern Analyst

IAI APPROVED – 16 Hours

This training has been approved for 16 hours of continuing education credits for Certification and Re-Certification by the Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Certification Board.

This course is being offered as a 4-week series, with one live webinar occurring each week.  When registering, you will have the option to register for the entire series or to register for individual weeks only.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students attending this course will walk away with increased knowledge of bloodstain pattern analysis fundamentals, pattern identification, crime scene interpretation, and the mathematical components of area of origin calculation and determination.

This course is also designed to help prepare any individual who seeks to specialize in bloodstain pattern analysis with the aim of testing for the Certified Bloodstain Pattern Analysis certification. The course will focus on lecture instruction, practical exercises, and case studies to promote the aforementioned components of the practice of bloodstain pattern analysis.

The individual weeks and their content will be as follows:

Week 1 – Friday, July 19th, 2024:

Week 1 will focus bloodstain pattern analysis fundamentals and composition of blood, principles and theories, proper terminology, and bloodstain characteristics based on variables of height, angle variance, and surface. Students will be exposed to the historical components of the field of bloodstain pattern analysis as well as wounds that are associated with bloodletting events.

Week 2 – Friday, July 26th, 2024:

Week 2 will focus on the proper identification, description, and interpretation of bloodstain patterns. Students will have the opportunity to practice properly describing bloodstain patterns utilizing the criteria of size, shape, distribution, appearance, and location.

Week 3 – Friday, August 2nd, 2024:

Week 3 will focus on the foundations of bloodstain pattern interpretation as
well as the detriments of the improper interpretation of patterns and bloodstained scenes.

Week 4 – Friday, August 9th, 2024:

Week 4 will focus on the mathematical fundamentals for calculating angle of impact, area of convergence, and area of origin. Students will be provided with numerous exercises to practice calculations as well as the steps for both trigonometric and stringing methods of area of origin.

Webinar Wednesdays

Tuition: $25

Join us throughout July for Webinar Wednesdays! From 12-2 PM EST, join us to discuss all things BPA with these exciting webinars, only $25 each:

7/3: Analysis of the Bloodstained Scene

In this webinar, we will discuss the approach the bloodstained scene. From preservation, to documentation, and evidence collection, we will explore the methodical and sequential approach to the bloodstained scene.

7/17: Tackling the Mathematics of BPA

Here, we will address the visual angle differences, proper measurement of bloodstains, and calculating impact angle, determining area of convergence, and mathematically calculating area of origin using trigonometry. Attendees will be sent materials prior to the webinar to follow along with practical exercises, if they wish.

7/24: Bias in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

It's there. Cognitive, contextual, and confirmation bias can drastically alter our ability to come to objective conclusions in bloodstain pattern analysis, and forensics in general. Explore how these forms of bias exist in the field of BPA, how to identify them, and how to minimize their effect.

7/31: 3D Webinar: Describing, Differentiating, and Determining Bloodstain Patterns: An Interactive Webinar

Prepare to enhance and expand your ability to not only identify bloodstain patterns, but properly describe and differentiate them from others. Here, we will explore the common question, "but, how do you know?" You will be able to not only provide an identification of a pattern, but explain how you came to that conclusion.
